Undressing in Winchester and Kent!

Well, I must tell you about an extraordinary morning we had yesterday. But before I do, I just have to fill you in on our gig at The Mash Tun, Winchester last Saturday. We had a fabulous time. The pub wasn't packed out but there were enough people there to make a real evening of it. Many of them had come because they'd seen us when we'd played there in the summer or when we played at The Beggars Fair. Anyway, it was great to see them. And, although the emphasis of the evening was on fun and we played lots of our up-and-at-'em, foot tapping material, a song that received a really great response was the mellow, atmospheric love song 'Spellbound' off our first album. We love it when people get up and clap along and dance to our own songs but it's also really lovely when a song that needs to be 'listened to' gets that sort of reception. Anyway, it was a great gig with a great audience, we loved playing there and we're delighted to be going back on 10th February next year.
Now, where were we? Oh yes, yesterday morning... well, yesterday morning found Alan and me at Maidstone in Kent to do a live session at CTR FM Radio on their Breakfast Show. This was to promote our gig tomorrow (Wednesday 1st November) at The Chicago Rock Cafe in Maidstone. We'd had to get up at 4.30am - oh, how one suffers for one's art - as we needed to avoid the rush-hour snarl ups around the M25. Left at 5.00am and at 7.30am, we walked into a great little establishment called 'Tommy's Cafe' just a few doors down from the radio station. Well, we must have looked like Halloween had arrived a day early - we were both dressed in black and had that pale, haunted look that only rising at 4.30 can give you and what with my orange hair and Alan with guitar in hand, it's not surprising that the cafe owner did a double-take. Anyway, once we'd had a mug of tea and poached eggs on toast we were ready to rejoin the human race. We wandered down to the station where we were met by Joe the producer and introduced to Ant Payne The Breakfast Show presenter. Great guys, both. Made us feel very welcome. The interview was fun and we played live - one of our favourites Morning Glory a bit of chat and then a brand new song Jump To It!. We think it went OK. In fact Ant received a text from a mate saying how much he'd enjoyed it. Ant said his mate was a 'right miserable sod' and if we'd made him happy on a Monday morning, we must have done alright!! We then went and checked out The Chicago Rock Cafe. Met the manager Mark, who'd just arrived and had heard our interview on the radio whilst driving to work. Fab venue - a bit along the lines of the House of Blues in the States - and with a stage that's sort of set into the wall high up above the bar. Amazing. We then went back to Tommy's Cafe for a further refuelling of tea before heading back. When we walked in, the owner and her staff said they'd missed part of the interview and asked us to play for them and their customers. Now, you know what a couple of tarts Alan and I are, so we did a little impromptu gig at 9 o'clock in the morning to a few stunned workmen and were given our tea on the house as payment and thanks!! Can't be bad. Strangest gig we've ever done! But if you weren't in the cafe that morning, and you didn't hear us on CTR FM, then come along to The Chicago Rock Cafe on Wednesday 1st November or any of our other gigs - see the gig list on www.stateofundress.com - we'd love to see you!

We continued to have a great week after our Liverpool jaunt. The following Wednesday 4th October, found us on the 1st Floor of the Virgin Megastores in Piccadilly for a little gig to promote our current album Ghosts of Wasted Chances. What a good time we had! The staff were as ever really friendly and helpful and we had a warm audience - many of whom stayed for the whole hour+ performance and shared a glass of wine or two with us as well. Here's a few photos just to prove we were there!...

This is one to keep the Alembic Club happy ....

He's looking very fetching in my feather boa!

(Thanks Helen for the photos!)

It was lovely to see some friends from Bohemian Voices - Janet, Lesley and Anna - well, someone had to help us drink that wine! - my great friend Ray Barker who never misses a London gig - but then the lure of free wine and a bag of nuts and he'll go anywhere!; and great of Alan Levermore of Proper Music Access to come along too.

Then the following day, Alan and I went up to Swindon to do an interview and live acoustic seesion for the Mark Seaman show on BBC Radio Wiltshire. We really enjoyed it. Mark, and his producer, Gerry, made us really welcome; asked us lots of questions and even let us play live on air. The mad fools! Actually, it went really well. At Mark's request, we played a favourite of ours Morning Glory and then took a bit of a chance and did Red Waters - one of our more thought-provoking numbers - but we felt it was a bit different and it worked just as well and as powerfully with just the two of us. We are doing another interview and live acoustic session for the Paul Bedford Show on Fen Radio 107.2FM this coming Sunday evening. Hope you can listen in.

We are now looking forward to our gigs at The Ents Shed in Bedford on Friday 20th October and The Mash Tun Winchester on Saturday 21st October. Hope to see you there!

The Cavern Pics

Well now. Just recovered from a splendid weekend in Liverpool where we played The Cavern on Friday evening. We went up for one night in two people carriers with enough gear and supplies to last us a week. We took a few State of Undress stalwarts with us - Julie and Dee, and our official 'road manager', Arthur - who's a walking encyclopaedia of Beatles and 60's music. Hence his absolute insistence on driving us up! Sam's mum, Sylvia, was bravely putting us up for the night and we arrived in the great city about 4.00pm just in time for a quick cuppa and change into our evening gear ready to sound check at The Cavern at 6.00pm. There were several bands playing that night - have to put a word in for The Jubilees and Ardentjohn - who were just so friendly and fun. We went on about 9.15pm. Now, OK, musically, it maybe wasn't the most satisfying of gigs as with so many bands and with us having acoustic instruments as well, the sound wasn't the best we've had. But there's no escaping the buzz and atmosphere of the place. We just loved being there. Met up with my friend Lou who I hadn't seen for more than 2 years, and her partner Moz, which was a real treat. Watched a couple of the other bands and then went back to Sylvia's for a little bit of an apres-gig! Malcolm and I did sterling work blowing up all the air-mattresses which was just as well as Liz woke up several times with a slow puncture, so to speak, and it was third time lucky for her! The following day, we'd planned to busk in the town centre but a five-hour journey both ways and a gig in the middle, we just decided to hang out and do all the Beatles touristy bits. It was brilliant. Dee and Julie caught the 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'; Liz and Malcolm did The Tate and The Maritime Museum; and Arthur, Alan and I spent over two hours going round The Beatles Story in the Albert Docks. It really is an incredible story. It's not til you spend time in Liverpool and see all the references to The Beatles that you really get some idea of the impact they had musically and socially. Went to The Beat Store where Arthur bought a rather racy pair of suede Chelsea boots; then back in the buses and homeward bound. Arrived back at about 10.30pm to round off the day with a curry from the splendid Mr Jarna and a few beers! (When we got back we found that Ghosts of Wasted Chances had been played on BBC Radio Merseyside on Friday afternoon. Result! Thanks Nickie McKay and Billy Butler) We're now getting ready for our in-store performance at Virgin Megastores, Piccadilly on Wednesday 4th October at 6.00pm. If you're in London at that time, we'd love to see you. Otherwise, catch us at one of our many other gigs - see our website for details www.stateofundress.com
See you!
