Festival Fun
Hi! it's been a month or so since I updated the blog. This is simply because we've been having such a good time gigging and then spent the intervening days recovering! So where to start? Following on from Luvly Luddenden, our next great festival gig was the Beggars Fair in Romsey. This was our fifth summer playing this festival and what a fa ntstic time we had! The Beggars Fair is such a friendly well-organised event so the atmosphere is always lovely anyway. But when we played in the afternoon, the response from the audience was just so wonderful, we were quite overwhelmed. Some of them had travelled miles especially to see us. We could barely get off the stage. We nearly took the roof off The Old House at Home and all to our own music too! We played again in the evening at The Tudor Rose and were worried that it might be a bit of an anti-climax but no chance of that. As soon as Danny and his mates from Birmingham walked in wearing their own home-made 'I'm in a State of Undress' Tee Shirts and bringing their own shaky eggs, we knew we were in for a good night! Thank you Romsey!
Then, the following weekend found us at the Somerset Steam and Country Fair. What can we say about this night? What dare we say about this night! What a terrific audience! This is another of those events where you are immediately struck by the atmosphere and feel - almost like one huge family. It was the opening night of the Fair so we were there mostly to entertain the stall holders and exhibitors. And, boy, were they up for being entertained! They listened and appreciated our more mellow songs and danced wildly to all our foot-tapping stuff - it's a wonder I had any shaky eggs left at all by the end! And then after a lively encore, we had a special request to play 'Spellbound' again as a young fella had fallen for a young lass and wanted a chance of a romantic dance before gallantly whisking her off to his caravan. We never did discover for sure whether it had the desired effect but as they both disappeared very soon afterwards, we can only assume it did!
We next played the Gillingham Festival on the Sunday of the same weekend. The sun blazed down on this lovely family event. Again, beautifully organised and with great facilities for the performers. Always makes such a difference. We played for an hour to a very chilled-out, relaxed audience; met some great people; and generally had a splendid time. A good way to round off the weekend.
And then finally, we played the brand new Evolve Festival in Weymouth. A completely brilliant week-end. We performed on the Friday and the Saturday. The young team of organisers had done a fantastic job in putting on this event for the first time. Plenty of stewards; great facilities for the performers; a few stalls but really good ones; and even the loos stayed useable til the end! What more can you ask of a festival - well, apart from wonderful sunshine - and they even managed to organise that! All in all, a great few weeks gigging and more still to come. Happy summer everyone!
